How to become a BaBar Member or Associate

There are two categories of people connected to BaBar, Members and AssociatesMembers are individuals who participate in the physics program or contribute significantly to BaBar.  PhD physicists who have been Members for at least one year and actively contribute to the experiment are listed as authors of BaBar papers. BaBar Associates are generally not authors. Typical examples are undergraduates, graduate students not concentrating on research, engineers, technicians, and programmers.

Under exceptional circumstances where an Associate has made substantial contributions to a particular paper, approval from the Publications Board Chair may be sought to include the individual as an author of that paper.

See the Membership Rules for more details.

Joining BaBar

There are a number of steps involved in joining BaBar, including registering in the personnel database, studying safety material, and obtaining computer accounts.
  1. Fill the following form in order to register with the SLAC User Organization (SLUO home page) database and with the BaBar personnel database.
  2. The previous step will provide you with a SLAC ID number (SID). With the SID you can apply to obtain computer accounts following these instructions.
    • Fill (only the fields you know), print, sign, scan, and send the form to the BaBar computer czar.
  3. Complete the cyber security training within 30 days from your accounts creation. Detailed instructions will be emailed to you.
All available trainings are listed in the Training Catalog (password required).
  4. In order to access the internal documentation you will need a Hypernews password. Please contact the BaBar computer czar to obtain one.

Coming to SLAC

If you plan to spend some time at SLAC you will need the Environmental Safety and Health Orientation training (course 219 in the Training Catalog) which entitles you to obtain a SLAC badge to access the site. If you are not a US citizen please contact the SLAC International Services Office or check the entry requirements on the Visitor User Employee (VUE) Center prior to your arrival at SLAC.

Changing from Associate to Member

If you are currently a BaBar Associate and wish to become a Member, please contact the Physics Analysis Coordinators.
If you are currently a BaBar Member moving to a non-BaBar Institution and wish to remain a Member of the Collaboration, please contact our Spokesperson.
